The Galerie Camera Obscura presents, for the first time in France, the Korean artist Jungjin Lee, with works selected from two series, Wind and Thing, which have both been the subject of a monograph. (Wind: Aperture, New York, 2009. Thing: Minseogak, Seoul, 2005.)
Although their subjects differ, these two series sketch the contours of a demanding body of work, produced by an artist who uses photography to pursue an interior research that is quasi-mythical, a meditation on our place in the world, and our relationship to nature and other objects.
Whether setting her sights on the distant or nearby, Lee transcends ordinary vision and extracts from the world “immemorial” things. These photographs give us a glimpse into what art might have been at its beginning: a shamanic meditation linking man to his surroundings.
So far, out of reach, the landscapes, the mountains and clouds of Wind…
So close, at hand, the objects-sculptures of Thing…
