The forms of nature are so varied that no attempts to capture them are alike. Those by Jean Gaumy in the series D’Après Nature tends toward abstraction and allow us to see them in stages. : the lines, materials and patterns only start to resemble cliffs, icebergs, waterfalls, mountains paths and forests after a period observation. Sometimes we’re unable to say what they are—or perhaps we resist reducing them to mere description, thus keeping intact the elusive, mystical feeling of the sublime. Gaumy has spent years sharing his fascination with nature through the open sea using photography and film. Here he captures the earth in all its majesty. The peaceful aesthetic contrasts with the rough waves of his earlier fascinations, and mankind has disappeared from his photographs.
