This series of photographs illustrates American photographer Joseph Szabo’s meetings and his friendship with lifeguards from 1990-2015. His first connection with them started in the late 1960s when he first discovered Jones Beach, near New York. In this exploration using photography as art form and documentary tool, his purpose is to give us a deeper understanding of the lives of the people he has come to know and respect. These photographs are, in the widest sense, portraits that illustrate aspects of their preparation, teamwork, breaks, camaraderie, but they also give us a sense of their duty and responsibility. It is now available in a book published by Damiani.
