In San Andres Cholula, for those of the Catholic faith, July is the month for the anual visit of Our Lady of Los Remedios; She is received in the community with great fanfair and magnificent displays of fireworks. What makes this festivity so interesting is that the Santisima Virgen desends from her shrine, located at the top of the world’s largest prehispanic pyramide, to travel in the arms of her parishioners the short distance to the parroquial church of San Andres Cholula. The unsavory part of this affair is that the state government of Puebla is building a large highway interchange over this area and thereby forcing change on the historical cultural paterns of the region; sadly, our eternal quest for material happiness and cultural preservation don’t always mix.
