The 1970s work of John Batho is a milestone in the history of photography. At a time when the artform was dominated by black-and-white, Batho chose to consider color “for what it is,” that is, a visual, constitutive and constructive piece of data in the photographic image. Batho based his work around issues of photography and color.
The photographs selected for the exhibition are from this period. They were made using contemporary coloring processes, which allowed the artist to best translate the original feeling and emotions, achieving the precision he sought, and restoring the finesse of the hues, the complexity of the vibrations and the tactility of the photographed materials, letting the works reach their fullest expression.
