Espace Ingendahl: Jean Marquis

Preview

From Saturday, September 21 to Sunday, October 20, 2019, the Ingendahl Space in Bubikon (near Zurich) exhibits, in collaboration with Ten Arts, a choice of 40 black and white photographs of Jean Marquis (1926-2019), with, opposite , works by the Swiss sculptor and painter, Kurt Ingendahl (1918-1982).

Jean Marquis, born in 1926 in Armentieres in the North of France, left us recently at the age of 93, leaving us great photographic work . First passionate about theater, he became a reporter photographer, encouraged by Robert Capa, illustrious cousin of his wife Susie.

Member of the Magnum agency from 1953 to 1957, he continued his career as a freelance photographer, collaborating with the Express, Time-Life, Science and Life … Humanist photographer, his images of political life, of everyday life, his portraits, are marked by a black and white  flawless framing.

Kurt Ingendahl, a Swiss sculptor, spent much of his life in Paris, France, when he was a pupil of Maillol in Prades, where he lived and made the bust of cellist Pablo Casals. in Alsace and later near Marseille. Sculpture was his major art, but his sketchbook never left him. We find in his drawings the same desire to capture this “great theater of the street”, as Jean Marquis called it.

In his India Ink landscapes we observe a sensitivity to light that matches that of Marquis, in contrast sometimes with the skillful night shots of the photographer.

A common inspiration seems to animate the work of the two artists who have never met.

This exhibition brings them together to share with us the humanistic and benevolent look they have on man and his time.

Sunday 20 to 15h end of the exhibition and conference with Isabelle Marquis on the work of her father.
