I divide my photographic activity between portraiture and travel. I’ve always traveled, and I’ve always taken photos of my travels. I’ve lugged kilos of equipment and refrigerated film to many remote corners of the world. I have thousands of slides in storage. But that was before.
With age, I travel light now, my hybrid, my phone and my sneakers. I don’t plan my trips “so I don’t miss anything I need to see”, I make sure I know where I’m going beforehand. Even if I don’t know what photos I’m going to take, I have imagery ready to go. I’m not a virgin when I arrive somewhere. My eye is alerted…
I take an average of 200 photos per trip; in reality, I take more, but I make a selection every night. And from this selection I try to make a “travel diary”. These are the thirty photos I consider the most significant of the country I’m visiting. They are in black and white. Why are they in black and white? I don’t really know. Probably because black and white concentrates meaning, whereas color expresses real life.
