March 11, 2011. An earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scales strikes Japan. A tsunami follows, causing critical damage to the nuclear power plant of Fukushima. The buildings are left in ruins, the infrastructure crumbling, the population was displaced. That was two years ago.
The exhibition 2 Years After revisits the disaster through a selection of press photos taken from the leading Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, including an image by Toshiyuki Tsunenari nominated for a World Press Photo Award in 2011.
Presented simultaneously in Paris, London and Hanoi, 2 Years After covers the events chronologically, from the earthquake through the reconstruction efforts, taking stock of the current situation while paying tribute to those who joined forces to offer their help. These photographs remind us of the scale of the disaster, but also of the messages of hope from the world over. This is also the occasion to acknowledge the photojournalists who brought us these images, which will remains forever etched in our memories.
