“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… Two years ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.”
Irina Werning
In Back to the Future, the Argentinian photographer Irina Werning finds the humor in recreating pictures taken years ago. This vintage photo lover is a master at reproducing old photos, which often feature children, with a remarkable attention to detail: setting, lighting, clothing. A fun and intriguing concept, Back to the Future has already made a name for itself. It touches viewers with its original approach to memory, offering an unprecedented voyage through time. Werning brought out her first Back to the Future series in 2010, then another in 2011. Her images were quickly covered by all the trendy blogs and websites.
A third series will be released this year, from which L’Oeil de la Photographie presents a selection of never-before-seen images. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Disneyland Paris, Werning has been invited to reproduce pictures of its visitors taken since its opening. They will be presented at a special exhibition at the Colette boutique in Paris from June 4 to June 30, 2012. The project received hundreds of submissions from across Europe through the Disneyland Paris Facebook page. Werning made the final selection, then invited the subjects back to the park for the photo session. When the subjects arrived, she took great pleasure in dressing them up in clothes that perfectly matched the ones they wore as children.
