A very fashionable thing these days, a male-female pair has been put in charge of Paris Photo and Paris Photo Los Angeles. Florence Bourgeois and Christoph Weisner will replace Julien Frydman, who is now the director of developments and partnerships alongside Maria Finders of Maya Hoffmann’s LUMA Foundation Arles.
Florence Bourgeois will be dealing with the business and management side of things. An art historian by training, Bourgeois spend most of her professional life with the LVMH Group, interspersed with the births of her four children. Until her appointment, Bourgeois was the General Director of PAD (Pavillon des Arts et du Design) in Paris and London. She plans to open up Paris Photo to more galleries and incorporate additional spaces.
Christoph Weisner will be the artistic director of Paris Photo and Paris Photo Los Angeles. An art historian, he studied at the École du Louvre before joining the Schipper & Krome gallery in 1997, then served as director of Esther Schipper in Berlin until 2012, when he became a senior director of the Yvon Lambert gallery in Paris. He laughs when recalling how he applied and was rejected by the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Photographie in Arles. His two favorite photo books are Jeanloup Sieff’s Comment faire de la Photographie and Brancusi dans son atelier. Today, he is a big supporter of the work of Bruce Conner. For Paris Photo Los Angeles, Weisner intends to highlight the importance of their partnership with JPMorgan, including the Introducing! Young California Photographer Award and another partnership with Leica.
Both recognize that, given the scheduling, there will be very few adjustments to this year’s editions of Paris Photo and Paris Photo LA. Next year is when everything will change.
