With the documentary collection Instantané d’Histoire (Snapshot of History), the TV network ARTE is opening the archives of anonymous photographers. Previously unseen, their pictures intimately recount the 20th century.
The 20th century is the century of photography. Throughout the world, millions of anonymous photographers created, without knowing it, a chronicle of their time. The Instantané d’Histoire collection revisits these photos to give an account of the fate of ordinary heroes. Films, made from amateur photos, are completed by animated archives. The account, subjective, is carried by the photographer’s point of view and adopts a narrative style close to fiction. The use of archives add a historical perspective to the events the hero lived through.
