in focus gallery, Cologne continues the new online series “Magic of Photography”. In the period of risk of corona infection with restrictions on public and cultural life, they present photographs from the gallery’s inventory.
Claude Fauville‘s erotic photographs have little to do with what we commonly associate with nude photography. His platinum-palladium prints practice the use of baroque and rococo, and do not celebrate nudity, but the art of exposure with sophistication. In order to realize this close connection to the Baroque, the photographer creates a new pictorial space, connected with the fusion of the body and its surroundings. The particular importance of platinum-palladium prints is that their tonality and color are closer to painting and graphic techniques than photography with their precision and smooth surface, as can also be seen in this work from 1994 (colored platinum-palladium print, 21 x 15 cm, edition 3 signed and numbered).
The in focus gallery published a second book on the work of Claude Fauville in 1996, “The Beauty of Rapture” with texts by Dr. Reinhold Mißelbeck, former curator of the photographic collection of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne.
The owners of the gallery, Anja Maria and Burkhard Arnold, write: “In April, our long-time companion Claude Fauville (first exhibition with us in 1993), whom we first got to know at the photo festival in Arles, celebrated his 80th birthday, due to the corona restrictions, unfortunately alone. We would like to congratulate him once again and thank him and his dear late wife Claudine for their hospitality in the past decades.
