The Falling Soldier by Robert Capa the most emblematic image of photojournalism has just sold for € 75,000 at Sotheby’s in Paris.
Taken in 1936, it captures the last moments of a Spanish Republican fighter, in a composition both shocking and fascinating. Capa took this photograph while reporting in Spain. It will become famous a year later, when it will be published by Life magazine in large format.
This photograph quickly became a symbol of the Spanish War, and marks the beginning of Robert Capa’s international renown. The photograph presented for sale is an exceptional period print, on the back of which is the label of the agency “Alliance Photo” that existed between 1934 and 1939.
