We are in 1978, the permanent Gamma – Sygma war is exhausting. I have already met Hubert several times on rue des Vignes during pool exchanges. He seems solid and efficient to say the least !!
It was in Beirut, in the midst of the civil war, that Raymond Depardon suggested that I buy back the shares of Gilles Caron, who had just been officially recognized as deceased.
But where to find this money? We must act quickly, and it will be Hubert who personally will finance this operation, it seems surprising, but it is the pure truth that will remain secret.
Our goal was to eventually bring the two agencies together, but this was never possible despite the good relations between Jean Monteux, Hubert Henrotte and myself. We were early precursors and the other shareholders too incompetent.
We have remained friends in the shadows for decades, and I was finally able to thank him for his gesture 40 years later by associating him closely with the making of the 50th anniversary book of Gamma.
