For nearly three months, Hong Kong is shining a spotlight on photography with the Hong Kong International Photo Festival. With exhibitions, conferences, educational programs, workshops and other events held in several locations throughout the city, photography fans and professional alike can rejoice.
Created in 2010, the Hong Kong International Photo Festival seeks to offer an overview of the practice of photography, regardless of technique, time period or region. The festival is organized by the Hong Kong Photographic Culture Association, led by Alfred Ko Chi Keung, whose many eminent members include photojournalists and photographers Anothermountainman (aka, Stanley Wong), Almond Chu Tak Wah, Joseph Fung Hon Kee, Simon Go Man Ching, Lau Ching Ping, Ng Sai Kit, Bobby Sham Ka Ho, Shima Eleven, So Hing Keung, Leon Suen Shu Kwan, Tse Ming Chong, Blues Wong Kai Yu, Ki Wong Suk Ki, Ducky Tse Chi Tak, Wong Wo Bik, Vincent Yu Wai Kin, Leong Ka Tai—who is also the president of the Hong Kong Photographic Culture Association—and the academic Edwin Lai Kin Keung, whose research into Chinese photography is the basis for this field of study.
This year’s theme is “Now Becoming Then,” which explores how the essence of photography allows mankind to transcend time and space,” and how moments from the past may be captured and revisited at our leisure.
