On hauteauctions.com, national and international art collectors can buy and sell important 20th century and contemporary works under the guidance of a team of highly regarded experts. The very first auction will take place on October 13 at 6 p.m. (CET). Haute Auctions is the initiative of art collector, gallery owner, and photography book and magazine publisher Roy Kahmann.
Pieces to be auctioned include, amongst others, those by artists such as Helmut Newton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bastiaan Woudt, William Klein, Desiree Dolron, Jasper Krabbé and Ed van der Elsken. Works include unique portraits of Andy Warhol, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Both diehard photography enthusiasts looking for limited editions or those who simply want to hang something beautiful on their wall can visit this auction. In total there are 63 lots valued between €500 and €100,000. Bidding starts on September 30 and will be supervised by auction house Invaluable, via invaluable.com.
The way the works are presented to the public sets this auction house apart from others: short online videos allow potential buyers to learn more about the piece and its background, such as its creation, as well as giving an idea of the look and scale. In addition, Haute Auctions distinguishes itself by taking an “out of the box” approach to the objects they auction. This includes the object BUTT X-Ray, an X-ray image showing a toy car inside television personality Ryan Dunn’s rectum, made in the 2002 film Jackass, The Movie. This object was not initially made to be art, but is an indelible piece of media culture history.
Other specialists who make up the Haute Auctions team include curator and co-organizer Margitte Verwoerdt, former Post-War & Contemporary Art specialist at Bonhams, and advisor Jop Ubbens, former director of Christie’s Netherlands.
Roy Kahmann has been committed to photographers for many years and launches Haute Auctions out of his enduring desire to give the photography world a fresh boost. “Now is the right time to present the top works of art photographers more prominently online, while at the same time giving more exposure to undiscovered talent. I want Haute Auctions to support Dutch photographers as well.” Margitte Verwoerdt: “Dutch photographers don’t often break through to the international auction market. That’s why we think it is important that the oeuvre of Dutch photographers gains a larger reach outside of national borders. We auction works of international quality instead of focussing only on established international names.”
Haute Auctions plans to organize two auctions per year. The next edition is expected to take place February 2021, and submissions to this auction are already possible. To participate in the auction on October 13, candidates must first register online. It is recommended to do so at least 48 hours in advance.
