“Three years ago, I was talking about making pictures that moved, but I didn’t know how it would turn out,” said Sébastien Rouchon, CEO of the of the eponymous Parisian studios, at the April 2013 launch of the interactive magazine Hardi. “Then the iPad came out and everything became much clearer.”
The idea is simple: take advantage of the new opportunities offered by digital tablets to, “dare imagine the content of tomorrow,” as the editorial in the first issue put it. Whereas most fashion magazines simply sell PDF files of the paper edition, Hardi is interactive and only available on tablets. Animated GIF and video lovers will be delighted. In photos, the dresses twirl, the diamonds sparkle, the outfits change color at your whim. For the first issue, Rouchon studios chose the theme of dance, featuring choreographed fashion spreads by the photographer François Rousseau, which come to life when the reader taps the screen.
Rouchon is currently raising money on the crowdfunding website KissKissBankBank in order to produce the second issue of what he sees as the future of magazine publishing.
