Hannibal Volkoff: Cult of the Body

Preview

From June 26 through September 4, 2012, the Galerie Hors-Champs will show prints by young photographer Hannibal Volkoff. After Larry Clark, Gus Van Sant and Nan Goldin, Hannibal Volkoff has carved out his style with his subjects/peers that visually evokes the sextape, online networks and mannerisms of those great signatures.

Rhapsody on today’s youth
The exhibition, “Identification of a mask: we have laughed about the prophets and danced on their shrouds” can be considered a generational variation, focusing on such themes as heedlessness, sex, and parties. The pictures highlight the initiation aspect, an assimilation of social codes and what our bodies are limited to. Culture and counter culture act as tests, the freedom of desire a fragile and impatient identity.

The adolescence photographed by Hannibal Volkoff wants to be seen, wants to be photographed. Provocative glances, incredible looks, the experience of no limits, the poses are messages from a society obsessed with the image, the “15 minutes of fame”, the most virtual instantaneousness. They are not bodies staged, but bodies that stage themselves.

He dissects youth vitality , eroticism and the ephemeral. His art work is often dreamlike, highlighting the essential value of fleeting time.

Born in 1986 in Nantes, Hannibal Volkoff lives and works in Paris.
After having studied applied arts at the Pivaut school, later cinema, directing and assistant directing, Volkoff took up photography . His work was first exhibited in 2010 around France and in Paris at such locations as the Galerie Le Simoun, Espace Pierre Cardin, or alongside Gaspard Yurkievich.  He is also Artistic Director of the Galerie Hors-Champs (75003) that opened in 2011.
The Galerie Hors-Champs is celebrating its first anniversary. Located at 13 rue de Thorigny (75003), it seeks to explore the current state of contemporary art in a variety of forms, according to founders Bernard Pegeon (galeriste) and Hannibal Volkoff (directeur artistique), while at the same time focusing on “experience art”. Art with a physical impact, going beyond established borderlines.
