Handicap & Dependance – Jean-Robert Dantou

Preview

Jean-Robert Dantou, photographer, joined the team of Agnès Gramain and Florence Weber in 2011. His work shows the results of his ethnographic and statistical research into the professional and familial care of disabled and dependent.
He met twenty disabled people, selected with the agreement of the team. He asked each of them to “stage” the groups of people that help them in their daily lives. Twenty meetings to witness sometimes difficult situations, overcome with the help of relatives and professional help. Twenty photographs that bear witness to the diversity of the situations: gender, class, age, location, nature of the disability. Behind this diversity lies the life of the family: married or single, children, parents, brothers and sisters called upon daily to help. These are important, because the providing of facilities and services often depends on complex national and local decisions.
It is part of the new visual anthropology, which pays close attention to the privacy of the subjects in the photograph and their control over their own image. These images could change the way the French public looks at these problems and their potential political solutions .
