Lynn Saville’s New York and Jeff Larason’s Boston in the bustling cities of New York City and Boston, where the heartbeat of urban life races, solitude has a paradoxical allure. In this collaborative showcase, “Cities: And Solitude,” photographers Lynn Saville and Jeff Larason unveil their distinct perspectives on this compelling juxtaposition. Saville’s photographs defy the conventional view of cities as sites for transactional relations, errands of business or pleasure. Instead, her photographs capture out-ofthe-way places, or even iconic spots, in New York City that are chronically or temporarily unpopulated, especially at twilight. During this brief boundary time between day and night, she paradoxically records timeless moments. She discovers a refuge for meditation, a silence at the heart of the city’s busy-ness and clamor. At those moments, recorded in her pictures, she feels as if she is communing with the city’s own dreams of geometry and shadow, while also gazing deep into herself. If a passerby wanders into the frame, she has learned that such a figure is not an interloper but a surrogate for herself and the viewer and a person who only deepens the sense of solitude. Jeff Larason’s exploration of Boston delves into the intimate solitude that people experience on the city’s streets. Through his lens, everyday scenes are transformed into poetic vignettes, where the stillness of empty alleyways and solitary figures evoke introspection. Larason’s photographs are a reminder that amidst the bustling crowds, an unappreciated solitude exists. “Solitude in Cities” is a testament to the artistry of two photographers who find inspiration in the quiet amidst the noise.
