Eric Antoine is presenting Black Mirror in a new version at The Square from May 28th through June 6th, 2015. These new images on glass were made using the unpredictable wet collodion process. This unique alchemy gives birth to precious and enigmatic monotypes. The materiality of the glass and the photosensitive magic combine to form a fragile object.
We see the photographer’s private universe through silvery reflections, luxurious nature, objects and isolated individuals. Antoine makes the introspection into a reflection on our condition as individuals in a society of excess. With Black Mirror, he stops to examine what we tend to ignore for lack of time. He celebrates simplicity while denouncing sensationalism. These large-format photographs are tinged with ambiguity, like tales whose endings viewers must find themselves.
The choice of the wet collodion process is meaningful. Beyond the sheer pleasure of aspiring to technical and aesthetic perfection, this process creates a temporal game between object tied to the origins of photography and its contemporary state.
