The Galerie Durev in Paris exhibits Xavier Zimbardo. Jean-Francois Camp, the curator of the exhibition, with Annie Boulat, presents it as follow.
Xavier Zimbardo is a photographer whose career is atypical, he was first a French teacher, but passionate about photography he quickly abandoned the education of our blond heads to leave for the mysterious Orient which fascinates him to the point of never returning.
He took his first steps in Thailand where he strongly denounced the sexual exploitation of young Thai children by vile Western tourists eager for fresh flesh. His report, published in PHOTO magazine, was immediately picked up by the entire press. He thus acquired overnight the notoriety of a photographer who knew how to take the risk of exploring the underbelly of our society.
It was in India that he developed his technique and his photographic outlook where color took precedence, in his expression, over the too formal black and white. He created his most beautiful images through contact with Indian dyers who captivated him with their multicolored creations. He traveled this immense country tirelessly in search of the absolute, photographing all the rites, all the confessions, all the sects, all the religious and funeral events, to the point of feeling part of this immense culture with its thousand facets.
It is this part of Xavier Zimbardo’s work that we wish to present to you, because the magic of colors explodes, sparking sublime renderings where emotion combines with the beauty of forms in a perfect unity.
