Jacques Mataly : invitation to travel
The Toulouse photographer Jacques Mataly himself describes his quest and his hunting as “an invitation to see the impossible, to take a look at the edge of the terrestrial globe, it is a waterline of the imagination.”
He gives himself the obligation to grasp the impossible, the intangible, the evanescence. Photographing the horizon is like grabbing something that does not exist and fixing it on a support. And this without resorting to digital technology.
Everything depends on the combination, the quality of light, the choice of film, and the technique of processing and printing on traditional photo paper.
The works multiply the horizons in the necessary large formats, without ever overcoming them. And this impossible line becomes the mark of the disarray and the ambition of such a photographer.
He is seated in front of the landscape for a work of infinite patience, of great rigor, of obsessive hunting for what escapes, like us in front of his works.
