The baudoin lebon gallery presents an unexpected point of view on the singular work of Joel-Peter Witkin. The exhibition invites you to dive into his creative process by presenting for the first time the artist’s contact sheets, but also drawings, accessories and unique prints enhanced with encaustic paint. Never intended to be published or exhibited, these contact sheets allow us to discover not only the moments that preceded and followed the making of these emblematic photographs, but also the photographer’s notes on the framing, the posture, the decorations, the light … so many elements that make up the image and allow us to decipher it.
With Joel-Peter Witkin nothing is left to chance. His work is the result of immense work, of trials, errors, more or less successful attempts both during the shooting and in the intimacy of the darkroom.
