It folds and unfolds like a map. And yet, This is not a map ! The editor, who shakes up our way of reading an image, invites us, this time, to California in a photographic journey that François Fontaine, represented in France by A. galerie and VU Agency, made between reality and fiction. Watch out!
California Dream invites you to explore the seaside world of California surfers in the 1960s, a defining moment of the American dream before it was spoiled by the intensification of radical tensions and protests. François Fontaine’s photographs are inspired by films and documentaries dedicated to surfing.
Thus revisited, their images gaining in intensity, are revealed as symbolic and timeless. The acid colors are suggestion of the Technicolor era and David Hockney’s chromo pop art. The blurring changes the photos into pictoriality evoking Seurat or Hopper. Sea sex and sun.
