As a Kuwauti of Palestinian origin, Tarek Al Ghoussein deals in much of his work with how his identity is shaped in a context of inaccessibility and loss. His work explores the boundaries between landscape, photography, self-portraiture, and performance art. Choosing locations much in the same way a film director does, he moves between abstraction and the specific circumstances found in particular places as he creates images that rely on subtle interventions and non-invasive interactions.
Al Ghoussein has exhibited extensively in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. He has held solo exhibitions at Roy Miles Gallery, London; The Third Line, Dubai, U.A.E.; Galerie Brigitte Schenk, Cologne; Kalfayan Galleries, Athens; and Sharjah Art Museum, U.A.E. His first solo exhibition in the United States will be held at Taymour Grahne Gallery, New York in September 2014, which will launch his second monograph as well. His work has also been shown in numerous group exhibitions, including the 55th and 53rd Venice Biennials 6 and 7, U.A.E.; Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Korea; Kunstmuseum Bochum, Germany; and Aperture Gallery, New York. His work is in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Sharjah Art Foundation, U.A.E.; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Det Nationale Fotomuseum, Copenhagen; and Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar.
Al Ghoussein received his B.A. in photography from New York University and his M.A. from the University of New Mexico. He is currently professor of visual art at New York University Abu Dhabi.
