Jean-Pierre Laffont will be the 2025 recipient of the Hermione Award at the “FASNY 44” gala on March 22, 2025. This honor is bestowed annually by the French-American School of New York (FASNY) upon individuals who have achieved global distinction, embodying the school’s mission to cultivate globally literate, multicultural lifelong learners. The Hermione Award, named after the ship that brought the Marquis de Lafayette to the United States, recognizes those who have made significant contributions on an international scale.
Over the past six decades, JP Laffont’s photography has profoundly impacted society by highlighting critical global issues. From the 1960s through the 1990s, he documented pivotal American events and individuals, including the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, Robert F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, Watergate, President Nixon’s resignation, and the Women’s and Gay Rights movements. His lens has also captured the struggles of the impoverished, the challenges faced by farmers, the realities of racism, and the complexities of immigration. Through his compelling imagery, Laffont has not only chronicled history but also inspired societal change.
This award is a recognition of the courage, humanity, and promotion of French culture that JP has demonstrated throughout his career. As FASNY celebrates its 44th year of academic excellence, infused with the vibrant spirit reminiscent of Studio 54, the school is excited to honor an individual who encapsulates the diversity and dynamism of the community.
