“I have a thing about leaves,” says photographer Verna Todd. One of her first exhibits featured a series of dracaena leaves, and she has done more shows on leaves than on any other subject. Her approach for this exhibit is imaginative, portraying leaves in settings that play with the word leaf. She explains that, “A leaf can be a page, for example, or part of a figure of speech, as in turning over a new leaf.” Her photograph titled Belief even plays with the sound of the word. When asked what it is about leaves that draws her, she acknowledges that it is more than their beauty: “Perhaps in their cycle of seasons they make me pause to appreciate life itself.”
Todd’s studies in photography include training at the Art Institute of Chicago and The International Center of Photography in New York. She has exhibited in juried and invitational shows throughout the American West, Midwest and in Mexico and Palestine. Todd is a member of Perspective Gallery in Evanston.
