Rethink. Refocus. Recharge.
The Photography Master Retreat 2020, 6th Edition will take place July 4-11, 2020, immediately after the opening week of Les Rencontres d’Arles. It is a very different kind of immersive workshop specifically designed for established, professional, and emerging photographers – fine art, conceptual, or documentary – who are passionate about their work and want to take it to the next level. Each photographer brings a project with them.
Our three internationally acclaimed mentor/educators
ELISABETH BIONDI – Visuals Editor 1996-2011, The New Yorker, Independent Curator, Writer and Faculty at School of Visual Arts, New York
MARTINE FOUGERON – Photographer, Artist, Faculty at International Center of Photography, New York, and founder of the retreat
LYLE REXER – Critic, Curator, and Faculty at School of Visual Arts, New York
(All available for interviews)
This is a new model of retreat
Unlike all the shooting-based photography sessions in scenic locations which promise to enhance technical and professional skills, The Photography Master Retreat is a unique workshop that emphasizes self-reflection and intensive critique. The goal is to heighten creativity and advance the participants’ practice to levels they may not have contemplated. With help from the three mentors, the students look intensively at the work they have made and are making, think about what it means, and discover what it should be. What is the essence of the work? What makes it ‘theirs’ and no one else’s? What paths are most productive? What should be set aside?
This results in new decisions, new directions, and a new level of creative ambition. The process is both challenging and joyful, and often transforms the photographer’s sense of him/herself, not only as a photographer but also as a person.
We create a vibrant community
The mentors and participants live and work together in a rambling house in the tiny, remote hamlet of Esparon, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. By spending days, meals and evenings together, there is ample opportunity for discussion, input and support. This kind of communal living, which includes local, fresh Provençal cuisine prepared by our chef-in-residence, helps inform the process and creates special bonds and friendships.
As one #tmpralumni summarized, ‘People who are serious about photography and unserious at dinner are perfect!’
