Jimmy Nelson devotes his life to portray Indigenous cultures across the world before their cultures and crucial knowledge are lost forever. His series ‘The Last Sentinels is currently on view at The Photo Gallery Paffrath, in Düsseldorf.
With his project “Homage to Humanity”, Jimmy visits over 25 communities and returns to three communities featured in his first book “Before they pass away”.He works with attention to detail, setting the stage with meticulous care. It is all about perfection – a measured balance of shapes, colours, and, most of all, light. Jimmy only uses natural light, which demands a lot of time. It means that he can be working on one image for several hours, or days, before he reaches what he’s after – the magic, enchanting atmosphere that the right light brings.
The exhibition in the Paffrath gallery The Last Sentinels gives a visual overview of the communities visited by Jimmy Nelson. In Jimmy’s words:
“These people are a living example of how to live in full connection with each other, themselves and the natural world. They are the few on this planet who are still in touch with this kind of knowledge and live by their values. These cultures are the guardians or ‘last sentinels’ of both humanity and this planet. Look at these people, look at their beauty, look at their power. Once that is achieved we can reflect on who we have become at the same time.”
