The Atelier d’artistes gallery is presenting Alain-Gilles Bastide & Noé Antonin’s father-son exhibition Voilà que mes racines me chatouilles les pieds, convinced that the creation of his fatherhood has given Alain-Gilles Bastide a new renaissance, both personally and artistically. The images that Noé Antonin are surprisingly gentle and profound for a 12-year-old who is shaping his first artistic discourse around this sensitive filiation, imbued with emotion and freedom.
“Over the last few years I’ve spent a lot of time restoring my early black and white images and series. The New French Photography 70′ book project (1) was the pretext for this. At the same time I’ve been accumulating on my hard drive the colour images I’ve brought back from my travels. As most of them were taken in the company of Noé Antonin, who was having fun with me making images and was also collecting some very interesting ones, we wanted to show them together. So we dreamt up an exhibition that we would hold for a weekend in a shop that was going bankrupt while we waited for the business to be taken over. We were thinking of a dusty, grey, derelict setting, where we could put up the dots here and there.
We were thinking of a dusty, grey, derelict setting in which to place the dots of colour from our miniature images. It seemed to fit in with the times and our approach. While we were looking for a space that could accommodate us, we met Virginie and Natacha, who told us about their project for an Artists’ Gallery on the Place des Vosges, and offered to take us in. The opportunity was great and the challenge very appealing. We set to work. That’s how the exhibition VOILA QUE MES RACINES ME CHATOUILLENT LES PIEDS came about, to show you my recent images and the first 12 of Noé Antonin’s first 12 years. Now the show must go on! – Alain-Gilles Bastide
