Steve Schapiro’s “Freedom Now” exhibition has recently been extended now through September 2nd. The show features Schapiro’s Civil Rights photographs taken from 1963 – 1968, including his travels with James Baldwin and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the South while on assignment for LIFE Magazine. In the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Steve Schapiro was on hand to capture the aftermath of this tragic event. In the following edition of The Picture | The Story, Schapiro recounts his experience while photographing Dr. King’s motel room.
