The Olympic Museum and Photo Elysée, both based in Lausanne, Switzerland, are co-producing an exhibition of sports photography from their own collections in collaboration with Les Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles, one of the world’s leading photography festivals.
The exhibition will be unveiled at the Musée Départemental de l’Arles Antique during the 55th edition of the festival.
For over a century, major sporting events have been accompanied by photographs. With the rise of amateur photography at the end of the 19th century, coinciding with the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, photography and sport have, in many ways, evolved together. Sport in Focus unveils the vast photographic collections of the Olympic Museum and Photo Élysée.
During major competitions, photographs are designed to draw attention to the athletes’ performances. By exploring a largely unpublished photographic heritage, the exhibition offers us a narrative that illuminates sports photography and the Olympic Games in particular.
