The Planches Contact festival opens its fifteenth edition from October 19, 2024, to January 5, 2025. The Deauville Photography Festival will kick off its inaugural days from October 24 to 27.
Based on a residency model, the festival offers photographers the opportunity to create and produce unique projects. These works are then exhibited throughout the city, either outdoors or in museum-like settings, from the beach to Les Franciscaines. Each year, around 25 original projects and productions, including exhibitions, projections, and installations, make up the festival program, which spans over two months and includes meetings, workshops, round tables, portfolio reviews, auctions, and a photography competition.

Photographic concert – Thursday 24 October
The Light Sang No Sorrow.
Images by Michael Ackerman, Lorenzo Castore, Alisa Resnik & Klavdij Sluban
Music by David Bryant & Alyssa Moxley
Alisa Resnik, internationally renowned photographer, and David Bryant, member of Godspeed You! experimental post-rock band Black Emperor, have been invited to take part in Planches Contact’s first creative residency involving a photographer and a musician. A new milestone for the Festival.
This ground-breaking photographic concert is an exploration of how music can influence and be influenced by photography. This residency with Alisa Resnik and David Bryant is in line with Planches Contact’s objectives of encouraging artistic dialogue and pushing back the boundaries of creative expression.
David Bryant’s epic and atmospheric compositions, which evoke intense and emotional soundscapes, will interact with the photographs of Alisa Resnik and the other artists, which are imbued with melancholy and mystery, between intimate moments and contemplation.
Portfolio Reviews – October 25 to 27
This is a unique opportunity for experienced photographers or passionate amateurs to present their portfolios to image professionals. The reviews offer a chance to discuss their artistic approach and receive valuable feedback and advice. Each review consists of a twenty-minute discussion on the participants’ work in a constructive critique dynamic.

Planète Initial by Initial LABO – October 25 to 27
Planète Initial returns to Les Franciscaines during the festival’s inaugural weekend. For five years, Planète Initial has been part of Deauville’s opening days. Over three days, the lab and their fine art printers offer insights into printing techniques and Hahnemühle papers. They also provide space for meeting specialized photo press, alongside a creative writing workshop on the festival’s photographic series. Initial LABO is the official printer for the Longines 25th Hour Competition and brings its expertise to producing Planches Contact’s exhibitions.
Talk and Screening – A Window on the Middle East – Friday, October 25
Talk and screening of Dans le cœur une hirondelle by Rima Samman.
Like in previous editions, with talks on Ukraine, Iran, or Venezuela, the Festival’s “A Window on…” cycle offers insight into current global issues. This year, the focus is on the Middle East, a region marked by recurring crises and conflicts, presented by artists through their personal histories. Laura Serani hosts a discussion with Rima Samman, director of Dans le cœur une hirondelle, which tells the story of a young woman searching for her Lebanese roots. The film is a colorful mosaic of real and imagined memories, blending personal and collective issues through travel videos, personal archives, and film and news clips.
Talk – Phillip Toledano – Friday, October 25
Is it a true story?
In honor of the Festival, photographer Phillip Toledano reflects on reinterpreting History through Artificial Intelligence. For Toledano, AI’s arrival signals the next step in truth’s demise. We can recreate the world as it never was. For every conspiracy theory, there can be visual proof. Convincing evidence makes lies feel real. The exhibitions We Are at War, created during a Normandy residency, and Another America, revisit History, whether realistically or explicitly unrealistically, from 1950s America to the Normandy Landings. The talk will be followed by a signing of his latest books published by L’Artiere.
Screening – Dominique Issermann – Friday, October 25
An exclusive screening of the film Lyrics presented by Élisabeth Quin
Alongside Dominique Issermann’s monumental beach installation, the Festival exclusively presents her new film Lyrics, a surprising rewind through her journey with archival footage.
Special workshop with Harry Gruyaert & La Leica Akademie – Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October
A partner of the Festival for the last six years, the Leica Akademie is once again involved in the organisation of this workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to work with Leica equipment for the duration of the workshop.
A member of Magnum Photos since 1986, Harry Gruyaert is renowned for his compositions and use of colour. During this two-day workshop, participants will have a unique opportunity to discover his working methods, to explore the ‘material of colour’ and to develop their practice with one of the great names in contemporary photography.
