Alta Vista Arts will present a solo exhibition by J.K.Lavin in the Discovery section of Photo London Booth D17, curated by renowned author and critic Charlotte Jansen. Lavin will be exhibiting two projects, Crisis of Experience and IF.
Crisis of Experience by J.K. Lavin is a series of Polaroid SX70 self-portraits she took on a daily basis from 1979 to late 1987. This ritual also became a way to stay grounded as much of her life was unraveling, and it also allowed for a profound examination of self. The SX70 Polaroids have become personal artifacts providing a visual record of those years. In an era of digital capture, the project also considers the materiality and legacy of the Polaroid medium that can never be replicated. This will be the first time since the project’s completion that a selection of the original SX70 Polaroids will be exhibited.
IF is a series of silver gelatin self-portraits created with photobooth machines in 1977. In this performative work, Lavin considers the effects of advertising and beauty standards on the female psyche. This concept parallels what is affecting young women today as they seek to define themselves through social media.
