The gallery l’ANGLE presents ÆNCRAGES, an exhibition of original prints by Patxi Laskarai from May 11 to June 25. The author will sign his book published by Zortziko on Saturday May 13 at 6 pm. Gil Arrocena signs the text. He describes Patxi Laskarai’s work as follows:
By revealing what is hidden in the visible, the photographs of Patxi Laskarai manifest their vocation of sacred order. Instead of showing landscapes, they embrace the spirit of a place with its own atmosphere. Patxi Laskarai transmits his experiences on Mount Okabe, where he finds the immemorial presence of Basque myths linked to nature. This is why, rich in their emotional tone, his mysterious photographs have the power to connect the consciousness to the world. Above all, they evoke the reminiscence of a devotion to the alpha and omega of all that is born. Originally from Lekunberri, in Lower Navarre, and passionate about Basque culture, Patxi Laskarai knows that our relationship with the transcendent remains anchored to the earth.
The artist models his images to celebrate Okabe’s nature without pomp and circumstance. The composition, the blurs and the colors in half-light contribute to make vibrate a telluric presence in which the blacks of the pigmentary ink combine with the manufactured papers of Juan Barbe, supplier of Chillida, Barceló or Tàpies. Opposed to naturalism, such works make us feel atmospheres that question the foundations of our reality.
ÆNCRAGES exalts Okabe’s aura. By bringing the individual closer to his environment and his history, Patxi Laskarai deploys a surprising hierophany from which the sacred arises. At the crossroads of subjective consciousness and collective memory, his timeless photographs are rich in a multiplicity of interpretations capable of transforming our gaze in a lasting way.
