The photographs in this sale are from an extraordinary private collection of vintage photographs, both color and black & white from the beginning of America’s space program around 1960 until the final Apollo Moon landing in 1972.
These photographs are rare documents and photographic artifacts in the beginnings of the exploration of space.
NASA’s mission to land man on the lunar surface with a camera to map the nearest celestial body began with President John F. Kennedy’s September 1962 speech that included:“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win”. American astronauts were trained and fitted with Hasselblad cameras for this task. The first space travels were recorded for human history, scientific scrutiny, and the pure joy and spirit of exploration.
