The world’s largest smartphone photography competition is back. For the fifth year running, the HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE 2021 Awards invite photography enthusiasts to share their shots and celebrate the power of creativity.
This major competition, open to all Huawei smartphone users, brings together more and more enthusiasts each time. Since its inception in 2017, two million artists and amateurs have shared their photo and video creations in the HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE Awards. For this new edition, no less than 70 artists will be rewarded for their work, with the opportunity to win Huawei’s brand new high-end smartphone, the HUAWEI P50, as well as prizes of up to $10,000. The theme of the HUAWEI NEXT- IMAGE Awards is always in keeping with the spirit of the times. This year’s theme, “Better Together”, is sure to inspire participants, who have until 30 November 2021 to register for the competition on the Huawei website.
A prestigious jury
This year’s HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE Awards will be judged by a team of image experts from various backgrounds and countries around the world. Canadian extreme sports photographer Reuben Krabbe will be joined by renowned British art critic Karen Smith and French radio and television producer Olivier Chiabodo. Familiar with the most prestigious awards, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and founder of the Shanghai Photography Centre Liu Heung Shing will be joined by one of the NEXT- IMAGE 2020 Grand Prize winners, Lin Haiyin. Finally, BNU School of Journalism and Communication professor Yu Guoming and HUAWEI Consumer Business Group vice president of marketing Li Changzhu will complete the jury.
10 categories to celebrate the beauty of visual storytelling
Unlike most competitions of this kind that award a single winner, Huawei is offering 10 distinct categories for as many final winners. This encourages participants to explore different perspectives, formats and lighting conditions, and in doing so, to question the diversity and beauty of life.
Perfectly suited to Huawei’s strengths in smartphone photography, the categories selected encourage users to make the most of the innovative features of their devices, while telling original and compelling stories through photos and videos.
In doing so, they highlight some of the key features of Huawei smartphones; the latest flagship devices offering unrivalled zoom and low-light photography performance. Each category is tailored to a unique photography scenario in which Huawei’s devices excel, challenging

Portrait
At its best, portrait photography tells rich and compelling human stories, sometimes with more intensity than words. Whether the subject is a loved one, a model, or yourself, submit your best portraits.
Monochrome
Monochrome images dispense with unnecessary and distracting colour, helping the viewer to focus on subjects, textures, shapes, patterns and composition. Use black and white photography to reflect the mood, enjoyment or originality of the shot.
Colour
Huawei smartphones are renowned for their ability to produce vibrant, vivid photos. Show your true colours by expressing yourself through smartphone photography.
Snapshot
Photography allows you to live in the moment, encouraging you to capture important moments and scenes. Offer a snapshot that tells a moving story, or capture an important memory forever.
Night
Thanks to the power of AI, Huawei smartphones can capture incredible night scenes without the assistance of flash. Get creative in the dark and deliver an unforgettable night shot.
Telephoto lens
For many smartphone users, zoomed-in photos are often a sign of poor quality. Not so with Huawei. Use your telephoto lens to focus on the important details and show off the clarity of your zoomed-in photos.
Super wide angle
Wide-angle lenses allow photographers to get as close as possible to the subject without excluding crucial background elements. Use your photography skills with your smartphone to give viewers the impression that they are seeing the scene with their own eyes rather than through an image
Super macro
In photography, as in life, small details are important. Explore different subjects and techniques of macro photography, while demonstrating your camera’s ability to capture the smallest details up close.
Story Maker
Shoot and produce a 15-minute or shorter moving film to express your creativity and share your story through moving images. Take on the role of director as you create a cinematic masterpiece worthy of traveling the world.
Narrator
Unlike other categories that only allow you to upload a single photo, in this catalogue you can use a group of photos (3-9 photos) to express emotions, tell a story, record changes or discover trends.
