During the second edition of Art(ist)Meeting, which will take place from August 23 to 25, 2024, at the Grand Casino in Knokke, a true temple of international culture on the Belgian coast, around a hundred artists from around the world selected by a jury will be presented for a meeting between artists, gallery owners and art collectors.
“LOCKED INSIDE”
With “LOCKED INSIDE” Patricia Canino, visual artist photographer, explores the meaning and notion of confinement. What confinement is it about? Probably ours. The imaginary space of our confinement, the one that sticks to our skin since our gestation, the one that has been passed down to us from generation to generation since the dawn of time. The confinement that envades our life and from which we cannot get rid of. We are not locked up, we lock ourselves inside… Because we were taught to. It is this confinement that we dream of getting rid of, and from which we try to escape for all our life on.
To invoke this feeling, those pictures are the result of a specific manipulation. Naked bodies pressed against a glass try to escape from an imaginary space. The Polaroid process offers the possibility of removing the emulsion from its support. It allows Patricia Canino to open the way to transforming the very “body” of the image. Her hands immersed in water sculpt, fold, stretch, deform the emulsion which becomes like a “living” skin, in order to achieve a metamorphosis of the image.

“Patricia Canino is a contemporary artist who experiments with the photographic medium as much in its capacity to create meaning as in its materiality. She crosses various techniques to better free herself and creates new forms that bring to light the extent of her thoughts. She uses photography and its tools as means of achieving aesthetic experiences which are at the same time experiences of detachment from reality, constantly seeking this gap between our perception of the world as we perceive it and as it appears. She lives and works in Paris”.
