“Instantly, the images take us to an elsewhere, at first geographical, then, with time, transformed into an inner elsewhere. A pause is offered to us, one that distills an unspeakable, real and profound excitement. Laurence Biaggi organizes pauses on the fleeting realities of the world that bring us closer together, against a backdrop of landscapes and places more or less inhabited. More or less rooted in reality, the artist’s images resemble apparitions, leaving it to the viewer to imagine what comes next.” Isabelle Lefort.
The photographs in the series entitled “Éloge de la simplicité” (In Praise of Simplicity) disorientate the viewer’s gaze, as the outline formed by geometric lines and a chromatic palette sensitively and spectrally underscores the materiality of the element captured: sand, sea, rock, rampart, fabric, human, animal or plant figure. Everything is reflected in a celestial setting.
In/out, sleep/wake, dawn/dusk. The construction of the images unfolds in a variation of dreamlike atmospheres, all with an unconventional, sensory beauty. They are moments in space where contemplation and simplicity form a whole.
Laurence Biaggi has created a highly personal series of quasi-cinematographic sequences in which an order, like a rule of composition, imposes the balance of the frame. In the watermark of her work, the photographer uses her subject as the material of the world to reflect on our perception of reality.
“Eloge de la simplicité” is a journey through Laurence Biaggi’s graphic universe, and the exhibition coincides with the release of her eponymous book.
Laurence Biaggi
Laurence Biaggi launched her career as a photographer in 2012 with an exhibition on Cap Corse, in Méria. While the photographer is initially inspired by particular places, exploiting a geographical perimeter both near and far, it is in a perceived balance “between the abstract and the concrete” that she pursues her aesthetic quest. A quest that is free, serene and demanding.
Several exhibitions have already enabled Laurence Biaggi to unveil her work: Alley Gallery (Paris – 18è) in 2018, Galerie Etienne de Causans (Paris – 6è) and Vœux d’Artistes in Marseille in 2019, a participation in the international exhibition “The Art of Photography”, organized by PH21 @Barcelona in January 2020, as well as at Galerie Collection Privée in September 2020.
The photographer’s main motivation lies above all in her apprehension of beauty. In June 2020, she collaborated with the magazineMaquis, illustrating an article on the chapels of Cap Corse with a series of photos.
At once carnal and immaterial, imbued with vibrating matter, Laurence’s work serves a dreamlike register, sometimes similar to the world of painting. In this sense, her approach to the elements revolves around liquidity and luminosity, with blue in the line of sight.
