The Rencontres des Amis du musée départemental Albert-Kahn will take place on November 12 and 13 in the salons d’honneur of the Hôtel de Ville in Boulogne-Billancourt. Each year, the Bourses des Amis du musée départemental Albert-Kahn, worth 6,000 euros each, are open to all photographers committed to documenting the world in accordance with the work of Albert Kahn who participate in the Rencontres Photographiques.
The Around the World Grants
Albert Kahn, an Alsatian from a farming background, made his fortune in banking at the end of the 19th century. Marked by the successive wars in which Alsace was involved, and at the same time accustomed to a peaceful and harmonious cohabitation between the different religious communities living in his native Alsatian village of Marmoutier, he realised at the time of the advent of the photographic technique that it could be a formidable tool for knowledge of other cultures with a view to pacifying the world. Indeed, he was convinced that knowledge led to tolerance. He devoted his fortune to promoting knowledge of others and dialogue between cultures everywhere.
Thus, in 1895, he created the “Bourses autour du monde” [Around the world Grants], offering the opportunity to young French and foreign graduates – men and women – to go on photographic expeditions around the world, to enrich their direct knowledge of the world and its populations beyond what is described in books.
In keeping with the banker patron’s approach, the Friends of the Albert-Kahn Museum association launched in 2017, with the invaluable support of the City of Boulogne-Billancourt, grants intended for photographers engaged in work combining photography and the humanities, in an approach to documenting the world that is faithful to Albert Kahn and in keeping with the humanist values he defended:
Openness to the world and respect for others and the dialogue of cultures through the discovery of territories and populations
The mission of these grants is to financially support, honour, encourage and promote photographic authors who put their talent at the service of knowledge of the world and the discovery of territories and populations.
Organised in November, during the high point of the photography season in Paris, individual meetings between experts in the world of photography are offered to photographers involved in the exploration of territories and populations.
These meetings aim to allow each artist to share a sincere moment of photographic and human exchange with the experts during individual interviews of 20 minutes:
to give visibility to their work to all the experts (provided that they respect the terms and conditions of the applications),
to obtain new opportunities, an exhibition, a press article,
finding funding for a project,
be selected for a prize or a grant,
get professional advice, an outside eye, a critical appraisal of their work.
At the end of the readings, the Jury, composed of experts from the world of photography, selects 10 finalists, among whom are the winners who will be rewarded with 5000 euros, plus 1000 euros of interventions, conferences or workshops, with the public of the Albert-Kahn Museum.
The winners will be exhibited in the gardens of the Albert-Kahn Museum and at the Boulogne-Billancourt Town Hall. The 10 finalists will have the opportunity to have their work projected during the winners’ exhibitions.
