Since its first edition in 2016, AKAA stands for a multi-faceted Africa, which transcends historical boundaries and whose voices resonate in the four corners of the world, carried by the vision of each artist. The third edition of the fair will be held from 9 to 11 November at the Carreau du Temple.
AKAA – Also Known As Africa is the only art fair in France devoted to contemporary art and design centered on Africa, with an average of 15,000 visitors in the first and second editions. This year AKAA returns with the same desire to showcase a vibrant art scene, brought together by all the artists claiming a link to Africa.
The 2018 edition will host 49 exhibitors and more than one hundred artists will be represented coming from Senegal, Haiti, Ethiopia, Cuba, France, the United States, South Korea, Mauritius and the Middle East.
All types of contemporary expressions will be in the spotlight including many photographic proposals. Among them, the monumental installation by Cuban artist Susana Pilar, represented by the GALLERIA CONTINUA, in the central nave of the Carreau du Temple, which is a kind of reconstruction of a photographic family portrait in black and white, under the Laura Salas Redondo Police Station.
A must-see also, “Unleashed”: a collaboration of the artists Roger Ballen and Hans Lemmen, presented by the ARTCO gallery. Quite di erent in background and cultural in uences, what Ballen and Lemmen share is a passion for delving into the abyss of the human mind.
Thanks to the partnership with Les Maisons du Voyage, artist Alun Be will present his «Edification» series, a representation of the imprint of technology on our societies, for a special solo show at AKAA Underground.
