The “Aliança Francesa Photo Prize” opens its registration on May 16, 2022 on the theme “Dreams”, from June 16, 2022 to June 23, 2022. The national photography contest of the Alliance Française will reward the first prize winner with a trip to France for professional meetings, as well as a collective exhibition with the second and third prizes, at the Alliance Française Botafogo Gallery.
The Aliança Francesa Photo Award is open to both professional and amateur photographers, and seeks to value original, experimental, abstract or documentary artistic proposals that can offer a different view of the current themes proposed by the contest and that represent an echo of the great issues of our time.
After completing the online registration form, participants must also send via the website, by “upload”, the series with 10 color or black and white photographs, under the theme “Sonhos”, proposed in this edition and illustrated by a photograph from the series “The Delivery” by photographer Gustavo Minas, awarded in the 2017 edition. The images can be manipulated, and must be sent in a maximum size of 2mb and in JPG format, obtained by analog equipment (camera of any format, pinhole or other technique) or digital.
Throughout history, dreams have fascinated people and their nature and meanings have been the subject of scientific, philosophical, religious and cultural debate. For Freud, they are the expression of our unconscious anxieties and desires, but the use of the term “dream” has gone beyond the field of individual imagination into everyday language, to become the projection of our projects and desires into the real world.
The eleventh edition of the Aliança Francesa Photo Award, proposes an interpretation of the dream in all its meanings. At a time when we seek to reinvent the post-pandemic future, the dream represents a power of personal and social transformation. Whether through the representation of the dream state we find ourselves in during sleep or the expression of concrete desires, the competition is an invitation to realize our dreams through photography.
Organized by the Alliances Françaises Network in Brazil, the contest is supported by Air France, the French magazine L’Oeil de la Photographie, the French exhibition and photography network Réseau Diagonal, the Carioca photography and arts cluster Ateliê Oriente, the São Paulo publisher Lovely House, the contemporary photography magazine of the Moreira Salles Institute, Revista ZUM, the social and environmental photography biennial PhotoClimat, as well as the French Embassy in Brazil and the Institut Français.
The Aliança Francesa Photo Prize will award the first prizewinner a trip to France for professional meetings in partnership with the Diagonal network, with Air France tickets, in addition to the publication of his portfolio in the French magazine L’Oeil de la Photographie. The second will be able to participate in an artistic residency in Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with the Atelier Oriente. The third and the winner of the popular jury prize will win a professional distance mentorship with Ateliê Oriente. In addition to the main prizes, two special prizes will also be offered: the Lovely House prize, which consists of a remote residency in photo book formatting, in partnership with the São Paulo publisher and book house Lovely House, and the PhotoClimat prize, which offers the distribution of the portfolio at the Maison du Climat in Paris – in partnership with the Photo Climat Biennial.
The jury will be composed of Erika Negrel, general secretary of the Diagonal Network, a network that brings together sites of exhibition, practice and photographic production in France; photographer and collector of contemporary photography Joaquim Paiva; photographer Marcela Bonfim; Nicolas Henry, French photographer and organizer of the PhotoClimat Biennial; Paulo Marcos, photographer and director of Ateliê Oriente; the editor-in-chief of the magazine ZUM, Thyago Nogueira; and the French gallery owner Valérie Cazin
