Crossing

Through my photographs, I’ve sought to express what fascinates me about ferry travel. It’s always a special, euphoric moment to leave the familiar, confined space of the car to join these immense boats. We take advantage of the last moments of the day to admire the horizon as far as the eye can see, before returning to the cramped confines of our cabin. Tomorrow, the journey will come to an end, with its promise of sunshine. For now, all we can do is wait, as if on a station platform, in a kind of motionless journey. Time seems suspended.

Ferries are often seen as social spaces, where passengers mingle, chat and share convivial moments. However, there are also periods of silence, isolation and contemplation, when passengers find themselves alone, in communion with the sea and their thoughts. It’s these moments that I tirelessly track down, crossing after crossing.
