Malagasy photographer Emmanuelle Andrianjafy won today the Mack First Book Award. In competition with the big names of the photographer (Poulomi Basu, Amy Elkins or Alix Marie), her work was already appreciated during the last edition of Paris Photo. She was awarded for her book Prize Nothing’s in Vain.
Her book Nothing’s in Vain gained the jury’s adherence, showing the chaos, joy, boiling and tranquility of Dakar within heterogeneous set of scenes printed in black and whit. The photographer lives in Dakar since 2011, having grown up in Madagascar and lived and worked as an engineer in Paris. In June 2016, the photographer described to the British Journal of Photography Dakar as an “energetic, hectic, noisy” city, agitated in spite of the sea atmosphere. These photographs retranscribe impressions, forming a notebook or logbook of its peregrinations in the Senegalese capital.
