Spomeniks
The SPOMENIKS, ‘monuments’ in Yugoslav, are a group of architectural totems erected by Tito to celebrate the friendship of the partisans of this former part of the Eastern bloc. The Brutalist concrete style has an avant-garde gigantism that transports us into a veritable science-fiction film and counters the Soviet style of busts and statues. My inspiration was tinged with a supernatural touch, using lighting and night shots to give these ships all the fantastic splendour they embody. The encounter is almost sacred when faced with these UFOs that have just landed… To live up to the hype, I dressed up as a cosmonaut to celebrate these face-to-face encounters. (Of course, there is no AI in the photos, otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about photographs, the tricks are lighting and smoke).
