Éditions du Ruisseau presents the book Le Bordeaux des grands photographers.
Between the 1930s and 1960s, Jean Dieuzaide, Willy Ronis, Robert Doisneau, François Kollar, Henri Cartier-Bresson and René-Jacques came to photograph the Aquitaine capital and its surroundings.
The streets and monuments of old Bordeaux, the still active harbour de la Lune, the grape harvests with ox carts in Margaux or Saint-Émilion, the small street trades, the oyster farmers’ huts of the Arcachon basin, the warships bombed in 1944 and the arrival of American wheat the following year… The city, the port, the sea and the countryside with the vineyard were explored by these goldsmiths of the beautiful image or, rather, the true image .
These hundred photographs – most of them never published – allow us to measure the incredible changes that Bordeaux has undergone over the past three-quarters of a century. However, these photos also offer a powerful consolation: thanks to the poetic force of black and white, the beauty of the place seems definitively immutable.
