JARDIN NOIR
photo series and feature-length documentary (France Télévisions/August 2024)
Photographer: Alexis Pazoumian
In 2016, a few weeks after the “Guerre de Quatre Jours”, Alexis Pazoumian – Franco-Armenian photographer and director – discovered the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which literally means “Black Garden”.
Over several years, according to the course of the conflicts, Alexis Pazoumian tells the epilogue of the black garden, this territory where war does not wait: He gives a face to the people, the resistance fighters.
On September 19, 2023, the inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh suffered a blitz attack from the Azerbaijani army. The capital, Stepanakert, was bombed. The entire territory of Nagorno-Karabakh came under the control of Azerbaijan, causing the massive and organized exodus of 100,000 civilians to Armenia.
“Jardin Noir” presents the strange reality of life in Nagorno-Karabakh. Everywhere, the scars of war are very present. They are visible both on scarred faces and devastated landscapes. So how does daily life resonate when we live in a time on hold, perpetually on the edge of war? How does such an existence affect culture, traditions, architecture?
This long-term project which began in 2016 seeks to understand the inhabitants of this region, their struggle for independence and why, despite years of unrest, they remain committed to the cause. For the majority of residents, living here is an act of resistance.
