Sotheby’s New York is organizing the sale of Dr. Stanley B. Burns’ collection this Thursday, October 05th. The sale will gather 53 lots. Most of them are daguerreotypes dating from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
For several decades Dr. Burns has collected photographs and works related to medical photographic history. In 1975, he created the Burns Archive. Since the 1980s, he has authored several well-known photographic works, such as his latest Stiffs, Skulls & Skeletons: Medical Photography and Symbolism (2015, Schiffer Publishing). He has also directed several exhibitions and is frequently consulted for his encyclopedic knowledge and his expertise in medical photography for films, documentaries and television series.
