Created by editors Brent Lewis and Andrea Wise, Diversify.photo is a platform to highlight color photographers as well as women photographers in the United States. This project was born from the observation that photography mainly promotes male and white photographers, a characteristic that is not exclusively limited to photography but also to other arts. The platform was created with the help of Jehan Jillani, Jennifer Samuel, Elijah Walker and the website builder Visura.
As editor James Estrin, from The New York Times’s Lens blog, writes in a story, “Simply put, photographers of color and women are profoundly under represented in our publications and it is up to each of us to do something about this.” The website shows works from these wide panel of photographers. The two creators also created a list of all color photographers in the United States, in order to encourage editors and editors of magazines to make greater use of their services. A list also exists for women photographers.
